ArtMuvz Illustration: How I create

As an experienced commercial illustrator, I almost always start with an idea or concept -- then research it. Next come the rough sketches. Generally I'll work with traditional pencil on paper. I was trained and degree'd in traditional tools, pastels, conte crayon, lithography, calligraphy, oils then acrylics, pen and ink, watercolor, and then finally along came digital and I added it gratefully to my "skillsets toolbox".

When working in digital format,I scan the rough sketch. Then I use various virtual art tools to apply color, line, texture. Sometimes this will be the final original. More often, the piece speaks to me, telling me to add more or to remove weak parts or adjust in various ways to make the art become strong.

Frequently one art piece or concept will spin off to become a series. I am an old-time Mac user.

It's a good idea for artists keep notebooks or scratchpads. When you get an idea, honor it by recording it. I have been keeping notebooks for many years. I am dyslexsic, left handed, and was drawing full pictures at four, before I could make sense of writing and numbers. My belief is that the muse visits those who appreciate what they are given to illustrate. And please don't be afraid to experiment. Create what interests you, it will show in your work.
